The more pottery I see and history of ceramics I study, the more I appreciate a well made functional ceramic piece. I began my study in clay with a focus on sculpture and form. Now I seem to make more functional clay pieces than sculpture, with form equally important as function. I am interested in the varied and unpredictable surface produced in a wood-fired kiln as well as the highly controlled finish of the electric kiln. The shape of the piece determines which firing method I use for it. My work is made using the pottery wheel, built by hand or both.
